Welcome to TwoThousand, Pacific Opera's new partner

TwoThousand is an online portal for those who believe that there's more to Sydney than Oxford Street. From Bondi to Blacktown, content is amassed by a group of monkeys intent on uncovering the small stuff that makes Sydney special. Run from Right Angle Publishing's Sydney headquarters, TwoThousand refreshes itself daily with posts covering bars, albums and laundromats; not to mention the odd opinion on film, publishing, coffee and pants. The cream of this crop is emailed every Wednesday, arriving with a 'ping' in your inbox.

WHAT'S JUST BEEN ON?

EL AMAL, a new opera, has just been workshopped in the first week of May by Pacific Opera at Riverside Theatres Paramatta as part of their Breakout! program.

Click on the pic below to see some of the action
El Amal workshop

Written by Llew Kiek & John Shand, the piece looks at an Arabic family in Australia, negotiaiting generational and cultural imperatives.

Singers Maria Okunev, Maria Lurighi, Julian Brun & Phil Joughin wirked for a week with director Christine Douglas and the composer & librettist to tease out the potential of the piece.

With Estella Roche on keyboards and Mara Kiek throwing in some estern percussion, it was a highly valuable week's work which will lead on to two more workshops and a proposed production in 2010, $$$s depending of course!

VOICES ON A SUNDAY

Sunday 25th May 2008, 2.30pm
The Independent Theatre, North Sydney

Pacific Opera combined with the exciting chamber choir Bel a cappella and a 20 piece orchestra to present our annual concert at The Independent.

Eleven of our new crop of young artists performed a wonderful, varied program ranging from Handel through Wagner, Verdi and Lehar and on to living composers, Palmer and McGlynn.

The whole was brought together with a 20 piece orchestra under the baton of rising young Australian conductor, Russell Ger, in his last Australian performance before taking up overseas studies.

Our audience enjoyed great operatic choruses, Va pensiero and the rousing Brindisi from La traviata with choir and soloists.

It was great to see such a crowd there last Sunday and we look forward to seeing you all at GODS & SINNERS, our double bill in August at The Independent

WHAT WAS ON EARLIER THIS YEAR?

2008 GALA YOU PUT ON YOUR MASKS AND THEY WERE STUNNING!

Pacific Opera held it's second annual Gala Fundraising dinner on Friday March 28th at The Strangers' Dining Room at NSW Parliament House. Acclaimed flautist Jane Rutter was accompanied by that fiend of the keyboards, Andrew Greene with the fabulous tenor Glenn Winslade and young artists Valda Wilson and Morgan Pearse providing some wonderful entertainment.

It was thrilling to see so many people in masks, the prize for the best mask went to Michele Asprey whose feathers had a mind of their own by the end of the evening! Photos will be posted shortly.

Lucky guests snapped up great prizes at the silent auction including 5 nights at Club Meb Bali, stunning Aboriginal and Vietnamese art, two fabulous boating prizes and much more.
